| I am still a young woman, after all. -- Jun |
Jun is the only female member of the Science Ninja Team and serves as electronics and explosives expert. She's tough, independent, caring, and loving; very much the modern young woman. She seldom lets her feelings get in the way of a mission and more than once has saved the team by her analytic approach to trouble. Jun acts as Jinpei's older sister, but the two are not really related. Jun runs a cafe called the Snack J in civilian life and presses Jinpei into service to help out. Business is relatively good, and she occasionally plays guitar with the house band. The other team members can often be found hanging out at the Snack J, also known as Jun's Joint, when there isn't much going on. Ken frequently eats there and has run up an impressive tab, according to Jinpei. Jun's personality helps balance out the hot-headed stubbornness of G-1 and G-2. When they are reactionary, she is contemplative; when they fight, she is the peacemaker. The team relies on her talent with electronics, and she has come through many times. Unfortunately, as with many animated series of the day, there are abundant examples of stereotypical female behavior, such as an unrequited crush on the leader and lines like, "Oh Ken, what should we do?" Though these flights of girliness contradict the strength of her character, Jun is considered a valuable member of the team. Some of her most impressive moments come in times of crisis. One brilliant scene has Jun upbraiding Ken for letting anger over his father's death lead them into a dangerous situation. "Crybaby!" She yells. "My father, my father! What kind of a leader are you?" It's one of the few times she raises her voice to anyone but Jinpei. Jun was recruited by Dr. Nambu from an orphanage at Jupiter Mountain. During her stay at the orphanage she discovered Jinpei, still a baby, and became very attached. Acting as his older sister, she cared for the boy until Dr. Nambu offered her a permanent home. She refused to consider the idea unless he included Jinpei. Dr. Nambu agreed. Next to nothing else is revealed about Jun's background or family. Jun's character is not as developed as Ken's or Joe's, but there's enough to show her devotion, deep caring, and determination. She loves her team mates, celebrating their victories and feeling deeply their pains. There's nothing she wouldn't do for the Science Ninja Team and its mission. |
