The ISO
In the future, earth is faced with over-pollution and dwindling food and energy resources. In a response to the building crisis world scientists come together to form the World Science Organization. Among the renowned scientists that make up the organization is Dr. Kozaburo Nambu. The ISO researches and develops new clean energy sources and ways to reduce pollution in hopes of restoring earth's beauty and stability.
Galactor
Galactor is a mysterious planet suffering the same challenges as earth but more severely. Led by an unknown being called X, Galactor sets out to conquer earth and steal its remaining resources for their own use. Leader X has placed his second in command, Berg Katse, in a secret base on earth and directs the operations through him. With superior science, X creates weapons, monsterous mechas usually in the shape of animals, that Katse uses to attack again and again.
The Science Ninja Team
Dr. Nambu seems to know about the imminent threat posed by Galactor and secretly makes his own plans. He creates a five member team of fighters known only as the Science Ninja Team or Gatchaman. Nambu equips them with special suits called birdstyle and advanced vehicles and weapons. The identities of the Science Ninja Team are known only to Dr. Nambu, and he guards their secret vigilantly. Trained since childhood to protect the earth, this group of teenagers is the ultimate weapon against Galactor, and they thwart Berg Katse's every move.
The team is led by Ken Washio the Eagle and includes Joe Asakura the Condor as second in command and expert marksman, Jun the Swan as electronics and explosives expert, Jinpei the Swallow, youngest member of the team, and Ryu Nakanishi the Owl as pilot of the main fighting vehicle, the God Phoenix. From their own secret base known as the Crescent Coral Reef, the team watch over and protect the earth in an epic struggle for survival.
